Packing for the Caucasus: From Old Tbilisi Cobbles to Alpine Ridges

A single Caucasus journey can take you from a warm city street to a glacier in two days. Packing in layers is the secret.

Clothing

  • Light, breathable shirts and trousers for cities and valleys
  • A warm mid-layer and a windproof, waterproof jacket for the mountains
  • A scarf or shawl and covered shoulders and knees for church and monastery visits

Footwear

Bring broken-in walking shoes or light boots with good grip. Old Tbilisi is cobbled and steep, and trails near Ushguli or Tusheti can be loose and rocky.

For long drives

Mountain roads are winding, so pack motion sickness tablets if you are sensitive, a refillable bottle, a light day bag and a power bank. Your private vehicle has room for your luggage and for the snacks your driver will probably insist on sharing.

Small extras

Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, any personal medication and a little cash in local currency for village shops. Everything else you can buy in Tbilisi, and your guide will happily point the way.
