Crossing the South Caucasus: A Practical Guide to Seamless Borders

Three countries in one journey is one of the great pleasures of the South Caucasus, and it is easier than most travellers expect when the logistics are handled by people who cross every week.

Georgia and Azerbaijan

The Red Bridge and Lagodekhi crossings are the usual routes. Your Georgian driver takes you to the border, you walk across with your guide, and your Azerbaijani driver is waiting on the other side with the luggage already transferred.

Georgia and Armenia

The Sadakhlo and Bagratashen crossings open onto the Debed Canyon and its medieval monasteries. A hand-over to a local Armenian guide takes only a few minutes, and the route is one of the most scenic in the region.

What to carry

  • A passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates
  • Any visa or e-visa confirmation your nationality requires
  • A printed copy of your itinerary and hotel names

Our advice

Keep a small day bag with your documents, allow a flexible hour on either side of every crossing, and let your guide manage the queue. Entry rules change, so we confirm requirements with every guest before departure.
